In 1519 Carlos I of Spain, born in Ghent, was enthroned in Brussels as Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor of the German Nation. This was the beginning of a prosperous period of Habsburg domination. Brussels became a powerful centre of commerce and culture. When tired of power he renounced his position and made Brussels the capital of The Netherlands. The beer named after him (Charles Quint in French) is sweetish without being cloying. The bitterness is there, but not dominant with a hint of liquorice. Reddish brown. CAROLUS TRIPLE included twice

Fine beer and absolute pleasure to drink. I too found this beer at the Charle Quint Cafe in Brugge where I had a Belgian steak and a few of these delicious beers. Would be my beer of choice if readily available. Wish I could find it here in the states.
